The points system in IPL and many other cricket leagues is designed to determine standings based on teams’ performance throughout the season. Here’s an explanation of the typical points system used:
- Win: Teams earn 2 points for winning a match.
- Tie or No Result: If a match ends in a tie or is abandoned without a result, both teams usually earn 1 point each.
- Loss: No points are awarded for a loss.
- Net Run Rate (NRR): This is a crucial tiebreaker used to rank teams with equal points. Net Run Rate (NRR) is calculated based on the difference between the rate at which the team scored its runs per over and the rate at which the opposing team scored its runs per over. This rate is determined by dividing the number of runs scored in an over by the number of legal balls bowled.
