Rajeev Shukla, vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, stated that the Indian Premier League will begin on March 21. Shukla confirmed the date of the opening game and the final, which would be held on May 25th, in an interview with India Today on Sunday, January 12. India Today has heard that at today’s BCCI meeting, significant decisions were taken regarding the hiring of the new treasurer and secretary, with talks focussing on the tasks ahead. The IPL 2024 began on March 22 with RCB and CSK facing off, and ended on May 26 with KKR collecting the cup. Previously, Rajeev Shukla announced the date incorrectly as March 23, which he later rectified to March 21.
The IPL also announced the selection of a new commissioner for a one-year term. The next meeting, slated for January 18-19, will focus on confirming the Champions Trophy team. With the IPL scheduled to begin on March 23, the newly appointed BCCI secretary underlined the hectic schedule ahead, pointing out the back-to-back events that will require substantial attention and coordination.
The IPL 2025 super auction, which took place over two days in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, sold a total of 182 players for Rs 639.15 crore. The majority of the ten teams concentrated on strengthening their squads after keeping their key players. In the run-up to the auction, teams had significant conversations with the BCCI about many issues. Some clubs voiced anxiety about the mega auction, fearing the loss of players they had scouted and developed.
The auction was dominated by two major groups of players, who took front stage when the final list of 574 players was published. Several teams made huge offers for high-profile players, some of whom had previously had good periods with their prior teams, but a couple had tumultuous splits.
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history after being sold for Rs 27 crore, followed by Shreyas Iyer (Rs 26.75 crore) and Venkatesh Iyer (Rs 23.75 crore). Meanwhile, stars like David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, and Shardul Thakur remained unsold, failing to attract any bids.
