What are the Player Categories and Base Prices?
In the IPL 2025 mega auction, players are categorized based on their experience and origin. Each category has a designated base price range. Here’s an overview of the categories and base price tiers, along with how these prices are set:
Player Categories
- Capped Players: Indian players who have represented the senior national team in any format at least once. They are often the highest-valued players due to their experience and proven skills.
- Uncapped Players: Indian domestic players who have not represented India but have played in the first-class circuit. These players are generally more affordable and offer opportunities for growth.
- Non-Indian/Foreign/Overseas Players: Players from foreign nations who can fall under capped, uncapped, or associate categories. IPL teams are allowed a maximum of eight overseas players, with only four allowed to play in a match at one time.
Category | Base Price Tiers | Players (Examples) | Roles | Other Category | Team |
Capped | ₹75,00,000 | Rahul Tripathi | Batsman 🏏 | – | CSK |
₹1,00,00,000 | Shahbaz Ahamad | All-Rounder 🤾♂️ | – | LSG
₹1,25,00,000 | Nathan Ellis | Bowler ⚽ | Non-Indian Player | CSK
₹1,50,00,000 | Sherfane Rutherford | Batsman 🏏 | Non-Indian Player | GT
₹2,00,00,000 | Venkatesh Iyer | All-Rounder 🤾♂️ | – | KKR
Uncapped | ₹30,00,000 | Gurjapneet Singh | Bowler ⚽ | – | CSK |
₹50,00,000 | Karn Sharma | Bowler ⚽ | – | MI |
How Base Prices are Set and Adjusted?
In the IPL 2025 mega auction, players, in consultation with their agents, determine their own base price. The IPL governing council sets the overall framework by establishing guidelines and defining minimum and maximum base price ranges for various player categories, including uncapped, capped, and marquee players.
Within these boundaries, players strategically choose their base price, considering their past IPL performances, current market demand for their skills, and negotiations with their agents. This self-determined base price serves as the starting point for the bidding process, allowing teams to enter the 2025 mega auction with a clear understanding of the player’s initial valuation.

How Does the IPL 2025 Mega Auction Work?
Here’s a summary of the IPL 2025 mega auction process:
- 🏷️Auction Overview: A total of 574 players will go under the hammer, including 366 Indian players and 208 overseas players. Out of these, 204 slots are available for teams, with 70 of them being reserved for overseas players.
- 🌍Team Composition: Each team is required to have a squad with a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25 players, with a cap of 8 overseas recruits allowed in the squad.
- 📋Retention Rules: Teams can retain up to 6 players before the mega auction 2025, with a maximum of 5 capped players and 2 uncapped Indian players. Additionally, if a team does not retain all 6 players, they can use Right-to-Match (RTM) cards to match the highest bid for a former IPL player.
- 💰Purse: Each franchise is allotted a total purse of INR 120 crore to build their squad. This amount must be used to fill their team with the required number of players (minimum 18 and maximum 25), including up to 8 overseas players.
- 🎤Auction Phases: The auction will begin with 12 marquee players who will be auctioned in two sets. The first set will feature high-profile players like Jos Buttler, Shreyas Iyer, and Kagiso Rabada. Afterwards, capped players will be auctioned based on their specialisation, followed by uncapped players. The auction will enter an accelerated phase after player 116, where the remaining players will be auctioned faster.
- 🏏Indian Retired Players: Indian players who have retired from international cricket for at least five years will be eligible to enter the auction as uncapped players. This rule was reintroduced after being scrapped in 2021.
