The 2026 Cognizant Major League Cricket (MLC 2026) is the fourth edition of the league, running from June 18 to July 18, 2026. Defending champions MI New York secured their second title in 2025 after defeating Washington Freedom by just five runs in the final. The season follows a double round-robin format across 30 league matches, followed by four playoff fixtures, a Qualifier, Eliminator, Challenger, and the Championship Final, for a total of 34 matches across three venues.

Season 3 set records across the board: ticket sales up 53% year-on-year, global broadcast reach across 90+ countries, and 84% of buyers being first-time attendees at an MLC game.

Title Contenders: Who Are the Favourites?

With six franchises competing, the 2026 title race is remarkably balanced. MI New York enter as favourites with an implied title probability of around 25%, followed closely by the Los Angeles Knight Riders and Texas Super Kings, reflecting a highly competitive, wide-open field where any team can realistically contend.

Team-by-Team Form & Strengths

MI New York entered as the benchmark franchise. They are the most successful franchise in MLC history with two titles in three seasons, and their 2025 squad was anchored by Monank Patel, who finished as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 478 runs from 13 matches. MI New York are captained by Nicholas Pooran, who is one of the overseas players who can dominate MLC 2026. Their strong line-up also includes Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Kieron Pollard, and leading fast bowler Trent Boult. 

Washington Freedom are serial contenders. Since the start of the 2024 season, captain Steven Smith has struck 1,325 runs in 36 innings at an average of nearly 45 and a strike rate of over 155, enjoying a remarkable second wind in T20 cricket. Their batting is explosive but bowling depth remains a concern.

Los Angeles Knight Riders are the dark horses of MLC 2026. Analysts suggest they have addressed last season’s batting frailties through strong roster upgrades, and their bowling attack has emerged as a major strength this campaign.

San Francisco Unicorns carry a significant X-factor. R. Ashwin has joined the Unicorns and become the first India-capped player in MLC. He adds experience and quality spin bowling to a strong group that also includes Matt Short, David Miller, and Xavier Bartlett. 

Texas Super Kings boast consistent performers. FFaf du Plessis has been one of the best batters in Major League Cricket history, and his consistent run-scoring has played a major role in Texas Super Kings’ success across different seasons. 

Seattle Orcas are rebuilding. Under new captain Marcus Stoinis and new coach Adam Voges, the Orcas have hit the revamp button after managing just three wins in ten games last season.
