10. Shane Watson — The Big-Match IPL Opener

Watson built much of his IPL reputation on delivering in high-pressure matches. Across his complete IPL career, he scored 3,874 runs from 141 innings at an average of 30.99 and a strike rate of 137.91, including four centuries. He played his final IPL season in 2020, not 2019.

His most memorable opening performance was an unbeaten 117 off 57 balls for Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 final against Sunrisers Hyderabad. A year later, he scored 80 off 59 in the 2019 final and took CSK to within one run of another title. Those two performances give him a level of final-stage impact few openers can match.

Watson ranks tenth because his opener-specific volume and consistency do not match the players above him. However, his ability to produce two outstanding IPL-final innings earns him a place ahead of several openers with stronger regular-season aggregates.

9. Rohit Sharma — The Legend Who Wasn’t Always an Opener

Rohit Sharma’s overall IPL legacy is far greater than his position on this list suggests. However, a substantial part of his career was spent in the middle order, particularly during his early years with Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians.

As an opener, Rohit scored 3,449 runs from 126 innings at an average of 29.22 and a strike rate of 135.41. Those are strong numbers, but they are below the sustained opener-specific output of Warner, Dhawan, Kohli, Rahul and Gill.

His biggest opening contribution in an IPL final came in 2020, when he scored 68 as Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals to retain the title. That big-match innings and his long-term influence at Mumbai keep him in the top ten, but this ranking measures opening batting rather than captaincy achievements or overall IPL reputation.

8. Faf du Plessis — The Steady Anchor

Faf du Plessis scored 4,004 runs from 119 opening innings at an average of 36.07 and a strike rate of 137.50. His role-specific figures reflect sustained production across Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and, later, Delhi Capitals.

His strongest campaigns included 633 runs during Chennai’s 2021 title-winning season and 730 runs for RCB in 2023. In the 2021 final, he scored 86 off 59 balls and was named Player of the Match as Chennai defeated Kolkata Knight Riders.

Faf did not score an IPL century as an opener, but his 35 opener fifties underline his consistency. His lower peak compared with Gill, Buttler and Gayle keeps him eighth, though his longevity and reliability make his inclusion comfortable.

7. Shubman Gill — The Modern-Era Standard

Shubman Gill had accumulated 4,335 runs from 113 opening innings by the end of IPL 2026. He averaged 41.68 at the top and scored at a strike rate of 143.21, with five opener centuries and 31 fifties.

His defining campaign remains IPL 2023, when he won the Orange Cap with 890 runs, struck three centuries and scored at 157.80. That season included 129 in Qualifier 2, one of the highest-pressure knockout innings produced by an IPL opener.

Gill also contributed to Gujarat Titans’ title-winning 2022 campaign and has continued building one of the strongest active-player records at the top of the order. He is ranked seventh because the six players above him either produced greater long-term volume, a more destructive peak or a larger body of major-match performances. His position could rise substantially before his career ends.

6. Jos Buttler — The Century Machine

Few IPL openers have combined scoring rate and average as effectively as Jos Buttler. He scored 3,003 runs from 78 opening innings at an average of 41.70 and a strike rate of 149.62. All seven of his IPL centuries in the referenced dataset came while opening.

His breakout IPL 2018 campaign produced 659 runs at a strike rate of 158.41. During that season, he also reached fifty from 14 balls, which was the fastest IPL half-century at the time.

Rahul added further record value in 2026 with an unbeaten 152 for Delhi Capitals, becoming the first Indian batter to score more than 150 in an IPL innings. 4. Shikhar Dhawan — The Volume King

If this ranking were decided purely by runs scored as an opener, Shikhar Dhawan would be No. 1, and his overall career also keeps him among the highest run scorers in IPL history, He scored 6,362 runs from 202 opening innings at an average of 35.54 and a strike rate of 128.11. His record also includes 47 fifties and two centuries at the top.

Dhawan’s 6,362 opener runs are the highest in the position-based dataset, ahead of Warner’s 5,910 and Kohli’s 5,684. His career covered five franchises, including Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers, which were missing from the original team list.

He formed one of the IPL’s greatest opening combinations with Warner at Sunrisers Hyderabad and provided the stability that allowed his partner to attack more aggressively. Dhawan ranks fourth because his strike rate and individual peak were below Warner, Gayle and Kohli, but no discussion of IPL opening longevity is complete without him.

3. Virat Kohli — The Consistency Machine

Virat Kohli’s opener figures had grown considerably beyond the April 2025 snapshot used in the original article. Through IPL 2026, he had scored 5,684 runs from 144 opening innings at an average of 47.76 and a strike rate of 141.88. He also had nine centuries and 44 fifties while opening.

His IPL 2016 season remains the benchmark for individual batting campaigns, with 973 runs still standing as the record for the most runs in a single IPL season.  Kohli has combined that exceptional peak with far greater longevity than most high-strike-rate openers.

He ranks third rather than first because Warner adds title-winning captaincy and Gayle produced a more destructive peak. Statistically, however, Kohli has a legitimate claim to No. 1: he has more opener runs than Gayle, a higher average than both Gayle and Warner, and an increasingly competitive strike rate.

Chris Gayle scored 4,480 runs from 122 opening innings at an average of 41.87 and a strike rate of 151.40. He struck six centuries and 28 fifties from the opening position.
