A look at the top 10 greatest bowlers in cricket history who defined the game

For a very, very long time, cricket’s been called the “batsman’s game.” After all, stellar batting wins you matches like nothing else. But bowling? Bowling wins you whole tournaments, and any fan knows that seeing a middle stump cartwheeling or a leg-spinner bamboozling a world-class batter just makes everything so much more fun!

Over the endless decades of the game, we’ve seen lightning-fast pacers, wily spinners, and swing kings that steal the show. But the question keeps popping up: Who is the best bowler in cricket history?

And sure, ‘best’ is pretty subjective. But there are still ten bowlers who’ve changed the world with their gameplay, and you can’t deny their impact on cricket. Let’s do a deep dive so you find out with us!

1. Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka)

Total Int. Wickets: 1347

Go up to a cricket fan and ask who the best bowlers are. Murali is going to be one of the names on that list.

His skills were top-notch and his speed and technique let him stand apart from the crowd. He shattered world records and took Sri Lanka to the world stage with his speed and his spinner, breaking down wickets and batters at every game.

For the Sri Lankans, Murali wasn’t just a bowler. For almost twenty years, he was their one-man army.

2. Glenn McGrath (Australia)

Total Int. Wickets: 949

As the best example of metronomic constancy, McGrath was the “pigeon” everyone knew about. He didn’t need to throw 100 m/h balls to break up lineups.

He could do that with just his accuracy, slight seam movement, and a bounce that basically made life impossible for openers. His dominance in the 1990s-2000s was what made Australia almost unbeatable.

3. Wasim Akram (Pakistan)

Total Int. Wickets: 916

The “Sultan of Swing” was more than a simple bowler fading from memory — cricket lovers agree he was absolutely fantastic with his two-way swing balls, his reverse swings, and his absolute skill. His ability practically changed how death bowling was done in the ODIs!

For those who value technique over mere metrics, his performance in the 1992 World Cup final is one of the best periods ever. It makes him the best bowler in cricket history.

4. Malcolm Marshall (West Indies)

Total Int. Wickets: 533

If there was a batter in the 80s who had to face the West Indies… they were terrified. The Indies had a quartet of fast bowlers who defeater batter after batter, devastating their enemies, and of them all, Marshall was the very best. He wasn’t the tallest, but he made up for it with his incredible speed and amazing bounding, taking the pitch by storm.

5. Shane Warne (Australia)

Total Int. Wickets: 1,001

If Murali’s quantity, Warne’s ‘theater.’ Having single-handedly revived the dying art of leg-spin, Warne was practically a psychologist with a cricket ball, from the “Ball of the Century” to Mike Gatting to his tactical brilliance.

His fans always argue that his ability to perform under pressure in the Ashes and World Cups makes him the best bowler in cricket history.

6. James Anderson (England)

Total Int. Wickets: 991

Long-lasting fast bowling? It sounds false, but Anderson proved those limits wrong. He is the best pace bowler in Test history, and his command of the Duke’s ball is unmatched. Over time, he has gone from being a raw, fast-swing bowler to a tactical genius.

7. Anil Kumble (India)

Total Int. Wickets: 956

As more than your average leg-spinner, Kumble relies on speed, bounce, and an unbreakable, untenable spirit. “Jumbo” is even one of the few bowlers to have ever take all ten wickets in a single test inning — versus Pakistan.

It’s easy to see why people all around India think he’s the best bowler in cricket history.

8. Sir Richard Hadlee (New Zealand)

Total Int. Wickets: 589

As the first to take 400 wickets in Test cricket, Hadlee was known for being incredibly precise at a time when all-rounders were quite good. He led the New Zealand team for years with amazing discipline and an (almost!) miraculous ability to take advantage of the batters’ weaknesses. Legendary.

9. Dale Steyn (South Africa)

Total Int. Wickets: 699

At Steyn’s peak, batters dreaded seeing him walk up to the field, ready to mow down wickets with his rhythmic run-up and a classic outswinger at 150 kph. He was even at the top of the ICC rankings for 263 weeks! Absolutely record-breaking.

It’s hardly surprising that he’s thought of as one of the best bowlers in cricket history and a real wicket-taker in every way, as his strike rate is one of the best.

10. Dennis Lillee (Australia)

Total Int. Wickets: 458

Lillee had the pace. The attitude. The technical skill. He was the best of the best in his time and even after facing a potentially career-ending injury in ’73, he didn’t give up! He moved onwards, shifting his speed and force into skill and strategy. He changed himself, becoming more tactical and efficient. For dedicated Australians, Lillee is still the best bowler in cricket history because he can stay deadly with cuts and changes.

What Makes a Good Bowler?

There’s not one single thing that’s going to make anyone the best bowler in cricket history. In fact, there are a number, and some of them (which the top ten embody) include:

  • Flexibility
  • A Knack for Wicket-Taking
  • Mental Toughness
  • Innovation

The Bottom Line: Who’s the Real GOAT?

A lot of the time, picking the finest bowler in cricket history comes down to what you like. If you want someone who is statistically better than everyone else, Muralitharan is your man. Warne is the greatest if you like spin. And if you like fast and swinging, then pick Akram or Steyn.

But the bottom line? Cricket’s always going to be a sport that respects the past even as it looks to the future. We’ve got so many new bowlers who take inspiration from these legends and try to beat their records, and for that very reason, they’ll always be remembered — for setting a standard of speed, technique, and a love for cricket.

But who do YOU think is the best? Did we forget about your favorite? Please tell us what you think!
