Shivam Dube was born on 26 June 1993 in Mumbai, into a middle class family. His father, Rajesh Dube, ran a dairy products business, and his mother, Madhuri, looked after the home. Like a lot of boys in the city, Shivam took to cricket early. As a small kid, he used to get someone from the house to bowl to him in the colony, and whoever it was spent half the time chasing the ball into corners of the ground because he hit it so hard even then.

While Shivam grew up entirely in Mumbai, his family’s roots are in Bhadohi, a district in Uttar Pradesh. His father had moved from there to Mumbai for work, and that’s why you’ll sometimes see him described as being “from UP” even though he was born and raised in Maharashtra. Winning the Under-14 Giles Shield, and the fitness struggle that followed

Dube went to Hansraj Morarji Public School in Mumbai, and this is where his cricket really started to show. His bowling helped the school win the Under-14 Giles Shield, a well known school tournament in the city. But there was a catch. His own school coach at the time, Nilesh Bhosale, later described him plainly to a reporter: he was a talented cricketer, but a fat boy. His father would come down to the ground to make sure Shivam was eating well, meat, fresh milk, almonds, pistachios, trying to build him up physically. But the extra weight, combined with a back problem, started working against him rather than for him.

Stepping away from cricket at 14, and the comeback at 19

The fitness issues and some financial strain at home together forced Shivam to stop playing cricket altogether at just 14 years old. He was out of the game for five years. In his own words, given to Hindustan Times, “I stopped playing cricket when I was 14 because of some financial constraints, couldn’t really work on my fitness at that point in time. I returned to cricket only when I was 19 and gradually started to work on my fitness levels.”

When he did come back at 19, he had shed close to 10 kilos, and it made a real difference. He was picked for Mumbai’s Under-23 side almost right away, and from there, his rise through the system started properly.

His father, Rajesh Dube, is the person most credited with keeping Shivam’s cricket dream alive through the hard years. Ranji Trophy debut and instant five-wicket haul (2017)

Dube made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy on 7 December 2017, against Karnataka. He didn’t waste any time making an impression, he took a five-wicket haul in his very first innings, showing right away that he wasn’t just there as a batter.

The 2018-19 breakout season

The following Ranji season is really where his name started to travel outside Mumbai. He scored his maiden first-class century against Railways in November 2018. In his next match, against Karnataka, he backed it up with a seven-wicket haul, figures of 7 for 54. By the end of that season, he was Mumbai’s leading wicket taker in the tournament, with 23 dismissals in eight matches. For a player people mainly saw as a hard hitting batter, that bowling record turned some heads.

The two “five sixes in an over” moments, explained clearly

This is one detail that gets muddled a lot online, so it’s worth laying out properly, because it actually happened twice, not once.

The first time was in March 2018, in a Mumbai T20 League match, when Dube smashed five sixes in a single over off veteran leg-spinner Pravin Tambe. Then, in December 2018, he did it again, this time in a Ranji Trophy match against Baroda, hitting five sixes off five balls. That second one landed just a day before the IPL auction, and the timing couldn’t have worked out better for him.

IPL Debut and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2019-2020)

Shivam Dube made his IPL debut on 23 March 2019, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Chennai Super Kings at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the same ground and opponent he would go on to play his best cricket for and against years later. RCB had signed him for INR 5 crore at the December 2018 auction, a big number for a player with such a short domestic résumé at the time, and the buy came right on the back of his second five-sixes-in-an-over moment against Baroda just a day before the auction.

His first season didn’t go the way anyone hoped though. He played only four matches, scored 40 runs, and didn’t take a wicket. He stayed with RCB through the 2020 season as well before moving on.

Rajasthan Royals (2021)

Dube spent the 2021 season with Rajasthan Royals, a shorter stint that didn’t produce a major breakthrough either. In hindsight, this period looks like the calm before the real turnaround.

Chennai Super Kings (2022-present) and the 2023 title

Everything changed once he joined Chennai Super Kings in 2022. Playing under MS Dhoni’s leadership seemed to bring something out in him, and by IPL 2023, he had become a genuine middle order weapon, scoring 418 runs at a strike rate of 158.33 across the season. In the 2023 final, his partnership with Ravindra Jadeja played a big part in CSK lifting their fifth title. . His strong form continued into 2024, where he scored 396 runs at an even higher strike rate of 162.30, despite CSK having a rough season as a team.  IPL 2025 was quieter for him by comparison, over 350 runs, but a noticeably lower strike rate of 132.22.

T20I and ODI debuts (2019)

Dube made his T20I debut for India on 3 November 2019 against Bangladesh, and his ODI debut followed shortly after, on 15 December 2019 against West Indies. He was 26 at the time of his debut, which is on the later side for an Indian international cricketer, and it says something about how long the road back from his teenage years away from the game actually was.

Building a role as India’s middle order finisher
