The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a critical meeting on Sunday to assess India’s disappointing performance during their recent tour of Australia. The meeting lasted more than two hours and featured conversations with under-pressure captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Following the team’s terrible performance, which were mostly due to senior players’ poor form, the BCCI opted not to make any hurried choices.

The meeting was held at a five-star hotel in Mumbai and was attended by BCCI President Roger Binny, secretary-elect Devajit Saikia, as well as Rohit and Gambhir. According to a source acquainted with the proceedings, while the Border-Gavaskar Trophy performance was thoroughly reviewed, no quick judgements were taken. According to the source: “There was a detailed discussion on the Border Gavaskar Trophy performance and what went wrong, but do not expect a hurried decision from the new BCCI administration.”

India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-3, the first time in a decade that they had lost the famous series to Australia. Their loss also resulted in their elimination from the World Test Championship final. With the Champions Trophy in only six weeks, the BCCI feared that any impulsive choices might harm both the squad and the support personnel.

Rohit Sharma, who was heavily criticised for his poor batting performance in Australia, received special attention. The 37-year-old scored only 31 runs during the series, causing him to withdraw from the fifth and final Test. His future in the Test team, particularly for the forthcoming five-match series against England in June, is doubtful. Similarly, Virat Kohli’s situation is being questioned, but he is thought to be in a little better position after striking a century in the first Test in Perth.

While a definitive decision on Rohit and Kohli’s Test futures will be taken during the Champions Trophy, their performance will have a significant impact on the BCCI’s team strategy. The BCCI has also implemented new instructions for players, requiring them to present proper medical reasons for missing matches. Senior players devoted to red-ball cricket would also be required to compete in domestic tournaments, such as the Ranji Trophy.

  • A thorough review of the team’s performance took place.
  • No quick decisions will be made, especially with the Champions Trophy approaching.
  • Rohit Sharma’s position in the Test team is under scrutiny due to his poor form.
  • New directives have been issued: Players must provide legitimate medical reasons for missing matches, and senior players focused on red-ball cricket are now required to participate in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
