India vs Ireland, T20 World Cup 2024 Match 8: IND vs IRE head-to-head record

A match against Ireland will kick off India’s 2024 T20 World Cup campaign at the Nassau County Stadium in New York. Rohit Sharma will have to answer several questions when he announces his team at the toss, most notably who will be his opening partner, Virat Kohli or Yashasvi Jaiswal.

It will be a desperate race between Rohit and Kohli to win the title. After their last win over a team from the International Cricket Council (ICC) back in 2013, both players have endured disappointments as captains and players. Rohit, who turned 37 earlier this year, may have only one shot left to win his second T20 World Cup title, after winning his first back in 2007’s inaugural edition.

The storyline also includes the departure of head coach and India batting legend Rahul Dravid. A dominant Indian team that bulldozed teams throughout the 2023 World Cup fell in the final under the former skipper. Last year, India also lost the World Test Championship final to Australia despite being one of the strongest Test teams in the world. After the tournament, Dravid will not be continuing in the role, meaning the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies is his last opportunity to win an ICC title.

Head-to-Head record

India has defeated Ireland seven times, winning each of those matches. Indian cricketers have never lost to Irish teams, and they’ve won all three ODIs they’ve played against each other. Andrew Balbirnie is the leading scorer in the T20I against Ireland with 156 runs in six innings, 138.05. Similarly, Indian Deepak Hooda is second with 151 runs in 10 innings at an average of 174.09. Among the players who will be playing in New York, Rohit Sharma is the highest scorer with 149 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 137.96. While another player can be against the United States today, Bumrah is second with six wickets

Can the T20 World Cup Inspire a Glenn Maxwell Revival

Glenn Maxwell

Can the T20 World Cup Inspire a Glenn Maxwell Revival?

Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell, the Australian all-rounder, is no stranger to the highs and lows of cricket. His recent performance in the 2024 IPL season was a low point, with an average of just 5.77 from nine innings¹. However, as the T20 World Cup approaches, there’s a question on everyone’s mind: Can this global event inspire a Maxwell revival?

A Rough Patch

Maxwell’s performance in the 2024 IPL season for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru was far from his best. With four ducks and a total of just 52 runs from nine innings, it was one of the more forgettable IPL tournaments for the Australian star¹. His performance left fans and critics alike questioning his form and wondering about his future contributions to the team.

The Silver Lining

Despite the disappointing IPL season, Maxwell’s bowling was a highlight. His all-round skills were evident, even if his batting was not up to his usual standards¹. This shows that Maxwell still has a lot to offer to his team, even when his bat isn’t doing the talking.

The T20 World Cup: A Chance for Redemption

The T20 World Cup presents a perfect opportunity for Maxwell to bounce back. He has previously shown his prowess in T20 cricket, with eight half-centuries in 31 innings at a strike-rate of 146.26. His ability to turn games around with his explosive batting and handy off-spin makes him a crucial part of Australia’s T20 setup.

Maxwell has also had some memorable performances in the past. For instance, he scored an unbeaten 104 off just 48 balls against India in Guwahati⁴. More recently, he thrashed 120 off 55 balls in a T20I against West Indies in Adelaide¹. These performances are a testament to what Maxwell is capable of when he is at his best.

Looking Ahead

As the T20 World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on Maxwell. Will he be able to leave his IPL woes behind and shine on the global stage? Only time will tell. However, one thing is certain: If Maxwell can rediscover his form, he will be a game-changer for Australia.

In the words of RCB head coach Andy Flower, “He’s going to the World Cup now and I don’t see any reason why he can’t turn this around or turn his own personal form around in the World Cup for Australia and I look forward to watching that”¹.

So, here’s to hoping for a Maxwell revival at the T20 World Cup. After all, cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties, and who better than Glenn Maxwell to exemplify that!
