The BCCI has confirmed that Rohit Sharma would lead India in ODIs and Tests till 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declared that Rohit Sharma would continue to lead India’s ODI and Test teams until 2025. This news comes after India’s recent T20 World Cup victory, which is a big vote of confidence in Rohit’s leadership.
Rohit Sharma will continue to head India’s ODI and Test teams after leading them to win in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados on June 29th. This action cements his status as a significant role in Indian cricket’s leadership system.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah acknowledged this in a video message explaining the board’s future plans. He especially cited the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final and the Champions Trophy as important goals for Rohit’s captaincy. “After this victory, the next stage will be the 2025 WTC final and Champions Trophy,” Shah told the crowd. “I am truly confident that we will win both the tournaments under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
The T20 World Cup final also signalled the end of an era for some veteran players. Rohit Sharma (37), Virat Kohli (35), and Ravindra Jadeja (35) announced their retirement from T20 internationals following the victory. The match also marked Rahul Dravid’s final game as head coach of the Indian Cricket Team.
Shah appreciated the achievements of these older players, as well as Dravid’s tremendous effect on Indian cricket. He also mentioned that the T20 World Cup triumph was India’s third final in the last year, after the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship finals.
With the T20 chapter ended for some, attention now turns to the forthcoming ICC competitions in 2025. The ODI Champions Trophy is planned to take place in February and March 2025. While Pakistan has been formally chosen as the host, there are continuing negotiations about the locations, particularly for India’s matches.
Because of the delicate political connection between India and Pakistan, the Indian government has refused to allow the national cricket team to go to Pakistan. Previous sources have stated that a hybrid model may be used, with India’s matches taking place at a neutral location, most likely in the UAE, similar to previous Asia Cup events. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wishes to hold all matches in Pakistan, the BCCI has continuously indicated that any decision regarding travel to Pakistan will be subject to government approval.
India last played in Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. Pakistan, on the other hand, travelled to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup after gaining official consent, implying a possible thaw in ties that would allow India to compete in the Champions Trophy.
The current World Test Championship cycle will conclude with a final at Lord’s in London in June 2025. India has previously reached the World Tennis Championship final twice, but has lost both times, most recently to Australia. Under Rohit Sharma, India advanced to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they were defeated again by Australia.
